Born on February 4, 1928, in Gomel, Belorussia.
From 1945 to 1950, student at Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Departments of Turkic Philology and the History of Near and Middle East.
From 1950 to 1957, worked at the Institute of Geology, first as bibliographer (till 1953), then as the head of the Reference Department. In 1957, moved to the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Studies, first as a junior researcher. From 1960 to 1962, headed the Institute's Academic Library.
In 1962, defended the PhD dissertation entitled Old Turkic Runic Texts as a Source on the History of Central Asia [Древнетюркские рунические памятники как источник по истории Средней Азии], supervised by Dr A.N.Bernstam and Acad. S.E.Malov. From 1963 till 2013, the head of the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Studies; in 2014, retired. From 1964, senior researcher of the Department. From 1969, lecturer at Leningrad University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of Turkic Philology, from 1995, at the Department of Central Asia and Caucasus, from 1992 as a Professor. In 2005, awarded with Gold Medal of the Permanent International Altaistic Conference.
Took part in a number of expeditions to varios parts of Soviet Central Asia, Siberia and Mongolia (first as a student in 1947-1953, last in 2003).
