Much has been written in English about Anglo-
Russian relations during the era of hostility and competitiveness now commonly known as ‘The Great
Game’, but relations following this period have been less well
reported. Yet the general impression given .by writers is that
competitiveness also characterised the cultural sphere, exemplified

interpretation of the ensuing cultural relationship between the
imperial powers and their scholars?..
