Zograph I.T. The Official Wenyan [Официальный вэньянь]. Moscow, Nauka, 1990. 342 p.
SUMMARY
The Official Wenyan by Dr. I.T.Zograph is an essay describing the grammatical (primarily syntactical) structure of the archaic (as opposed to Paihua) variety of literary Chinese language which was widely in use up to the beginning of our century in the official documents, speeches, research and political articles etc. Being the most complicated type of written Chinese, the so-called Modern Wenyan (i. e. the language of the late 19th and early 20th c.) differs sufficiently from the classical Ancient Chinese language, and such deviations in the development of forms and their usage have to be specially analysed and carefully described. To show its specific structural features is therefore the main aim of the present work based on the writings by Sun Yat-sen published in his Collected Papers (Sun Chungshan Hsiianchi. Peking, 1956; see above, pp. 5-6).
The book consists of two parts.
Part I. Syntax (pp. 15-218) presents an inventory of basic patterns of elementary verb and noun phrases (e. g., N - V, N - V - N, N - N - Cop, N - A etc., see above pp. 15 ff.) and further shows how on their basis the formation of various types of derived sentences and clauses takes place.
Part II. Grammatical words (pp. 219-331) following the Sinological grammatical tradition contains an analysis of the main classes of such words, i. e. pronouns, predicative substitutes, numeral substitutes, adverbs and particles.
An index of empty words and grammatical constructions allows using the book as a guide when working with the texts written in Wenyan.PDF-files Аннотация, Введение, Summary, Содержание
