The political system of Tokugawa-period Japan (1603–1867) was the result of centuries of struggle between warrior houses for control over land and people. This system lasted for more than 250 years without significant changes and disintegrated only due to external pressures. This means that the system maintained a proper balance between the threat of using force and the fair distribution of resources and power. How did shoguns and daimyo lords share power? When were daimyo lords divided into “insiders” and “outsiders”? Were daimyo lords really under constant control of shoguns? Why was neither side able to stay in power in the 19th century? Answers to these questions will be given in this lecture.

The lecture will take place in the Green Hall of the IOM RAS (Dvortsovaya emb., 18, Saint Petersburg).

Everyone welcome!
