Kychanov Е.I. The History of the Ancient and Medieval States adjacent to China (from the Huns to the Manchu) [История приграничных с Китаем древних и средневековых государств (от гуннов до маньчжуров)]. 2nd ed., rev. and suppl. St. Petersburg: Linguistic Society of St. Petersburg, 2010. 364 p. (Series „Nomadica").

This monograph describes, on the basis of accessible written sources, first of all Chinese, processes of the making of state forms in the midst of peoples of Central Asia (mainly nomadic) and Manchuria, as well as among the Tibetans and in the realm of Nanchao. The author has come to a conclusion that all of these nations passed through the processes of social stratification and class formation, which were, as a rule, results of the developments of the peoples and societies in question. The book examines legends concerning the origins of ruling clans, characterizes notions about the nature of khan power as that given by the Heaven and reveals influences of Chinese statehood on the state institutions of Central Asian peoples. The author has expressed his disagreement with some characteristics of nomadic societies that were put forward in works by certain of the modern scholars.

For all who arc interested in the history of the nomadic societies of Eurasia.
