Two years ago several results of the initial stage of my investigations in the field of Raybūn epigraphy were presented to the Seminar for Arabian Studies. Since then the interpretation of the Hadramitic inscriptions discovered at this site by the Soviet Yemenite Complex Expedition (SOYCE) has been progressing steadily. Thanks to the fact that some of the most complicated formulae used in these texts, as well as the general scheme of drafting peculiar to dedications offered to the goddess Dat Himyam, had already been examined (Frantsouzoff 1995), it became possible to turn our attention to a thorough analysis of the actual inscriptions, particularly to an understanding of their content and of the cultural phenomena reflected in them. The first steps in this direction were taken in my papers delivered to the 2nd and 3rd Sabaean Meetings (Rencontres sabeennes) in March 1995 and early February 1996.1 As a result, on the basis of new epigraphic material, the interpretation of the term grby-hn/ -n as 'stonemason' has been confirmed and the high social status of this craftsman in the society of ancient Raybūn has been demonstrated (Frantsouzoff, in press, a). In addition, different types of oracles uttered in the Raybūn sanctuaries and a group of thanksgiving texts on stelae dedicated to Sin2 on the occasion of recovery from disease have been explained (Frantsouzoff, in press, b)…
