Born on January 6, 1927 in Tiflis (Tbilisi) in the family of an electrician engineer. In 1946–1948, studied at the Historical Faculty of Yerevan University, in 1948–1951, at the Historical Faculty of Leningrad University; from 1955 to 1958, headed the Manuscripts Department at The Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (the Matenadaran); from 1958 a researcher at the Leningrad/St Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, now the IOM. During the 1970s and 1980s headed the group for historical and cultural studies at the Department of Near Eastern Studies, from 1981 to 1991, he headed the Leningrad/St Petersburg Branch of the Palestinian Society, organizing five conferences, some of which were international. In 1990–1995, he was a deputy at the Armenian Parliament. For many decades he taught at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Leningrad/St Petersburg University and at some European universities.

Dr Yuzbashyan published more than 200 papers in Russian, Armenian and European languages on various aspects of the history and culture of Armenia and the Byzantine Empire, took part in many international congresses and conferences, was a member of editorial boards at numerous academic periodicals, supervised PhD theses by several generations of doctoral students, many of which followed his academic path and became well-known Orientalists and Byzantine scholars.
