Senior researcher, Head of the Department of History of Arabic Countries at the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, Head of the Group for Comparative Study of North Caucasus, member of the Union of European Arabists and Islamists.
Born on April 28, 1964, in Dagestan. In 1986, graduated from the Historical Faculty of the Dagestan State University. Took doctoral courses at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at St Petersburg University and the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the St Petersburg Branch of the Oriental Studies, RAS. Had academic training cources in Cairo (1990) and Oxford (1994). Worked at the Department of Oriental Studies at the Dagestan Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography (1992), the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the St Petersburg Branch of the Oriental Studies, RAS (1993-1999) and the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS (from June 1999 up to present). Wrote more than 50 academic papers.
Major research interests: historiography of Islam from the 7th through 14th century, mediaeval history of Near and Middke East, Caucasus and Central Asia, Islamic studies (Classical Islam, Sufism, Islamic traditionalism), philosophy of history.
The 3rd International Academic Conference “The Written Heritage of the Orient” dedicated to the 140th anniversary of B.Ya. Vladimirtsov (1884–1931) will take place at the IOM RAS on April 22–24. The conference program is now available.
