Born on March 20, 1928 in Derbent, Dagestan, the USSR (now the Russian Federation).
In 1945, was admitted to the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Leningrad State University. The preeminent Russian scholars such as I.J.Krachkovsky, V.I.Belyaev, A.I.Yakubovsky, V.V.Struwe were his teachers there.
From 1951 to 1954, taught history at secondary school in Makhachkala. From 1954 up to present, works at the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Dagestan Research Center, RAS (former Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Dagestan Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences), first as junior researcher, now as chief researcher (from 1999). From 1973 to 1999, headed the Department of the Oriental Manuscripts of the Institute (now the Institute's Center of Oriental Studies).
In 1963, defended the PhD dissertation entitled The Spread of Islam in Dagestan [Распространение ислама в Дагестане], in 1976, the Habilitation dissertation entitled Dagestan from the 10th to 14th century. Social and Economic Research [Дагестан в X–XIV вв. Опыт социально-экономической характеристики].
Prof Dr A.Shikhsayidov is an honored academic of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Dagestan, awarded by the Government of the Russian Federation, a member of the Russian Association of Orientalists, Union of European Arabists and Islamists, editorial board of Central Asian Survey, London.
Major research interests include the history and culture of medeaival Dagestan and Caucasus, Islam and Islamic culture, Arabic mss and epigraphic texts, Arabic sources on the history of the peoples of Caucasus.
For more than 50 years Prof Dr A.Shikhsayidov has taken part and led the archaeographic expeditions to various parts of Dagestan aimed to find, number and catalogue personal and mosque mss collections in Arabic and different Dagestan languages, epigraphic texts. Around 300 collections comprising more than 5,000 mss from the 12th to 20th century were found out.
Published more than 250 papers, including 16 monographs. Edited the Catalogue of Arabic manuscripts kept at the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Dagestan Research Center, RAS (Grammar, Muslim Law) and the Catalogue of Oriental manuscripts kept at Dagestan State University.
For about 50 years Prof Dr A.Shikhsayidov has taught at Dagestan State University (the Historical Faculty and the Faculty of Oriental Studies), reading cources on the history of Dagestan, Arabic literature, Islam aтв Islamic culture and leading the archaeographic practice of students and doctoral students. He supervised 15 PhD dissertations.
