Born on August 26, 1933, in Moscow.
In 1956, graduated from Moscow State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies.
In 1961, defended the PhD Dissertation The History of the Formation and the Administrative System of the Maurya Empire [История образования и система управления империи Маурьев].
In 1970, defended the Habilitation Dissertation India during the Maurya Period. Society, State, Culture [Индия эпохи Маурьев. (Общество, государство, культура)].
From 1978, a professor at Moscow State University.
From 1981, a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1990, an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Sciences).
In 2000, elected as a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts. A member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. A corresponding member of the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient.
The chief researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, Moscow. The chief editor of the series Pamyatniki pismennosti Vostoka [The Written Monuments of the Orient] and the journal Vestnik drevnei istorii [The Bulletin of Ancient History].
Wrote a number of books and papers on the Ancient Indian civilization, edited a number of Sanskrit texts.
