Anniversary of I.V. Bogdanov Print E-mail
28/02/2025

February 2, 2025 is the 50th birthday anniversary of Ivan V. Bogdanov, Candidate of Sciences in History, Leading Researcher at the Department of Ancient Eastern Studies, IOM RAS.

Ivan Valeryevich Bogdanov graduated from the Novosibirsk State University (Humanities Faculty, Department of History) in 1997 and three years later completed his post-graduate studies at the Department of History of the same university (research supervisor: N.K. Timofeyeva, Candidate of Sciences in History). In December 2000, after brilliantly defending his Candidate of Sciences dissertation at our Institute, he started working at the Saint Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS. Research interests of I.V. Bogdanov, in terms of geographical region and time period, were tied for many years with his dissertation topic “The Early History of the Institute of 'Khentiu-she' in the Old Kingdom Period of Egypt” [Ранняя история института хентиуше в Египте эпохи Старого царства]. During 25 years of his work at the Institute, I.V. Bogdanov rose from Junior Researcher to Leading Researcher at the Department of Ancient Eastern Studies (2021).

Studies by I.V. Bogdanov ensure that Russian scholarship maintains its positions in the field of Egyptology. His research focuses on the socio-economic and administrative history of the Old Kingdom, the First Intermediate Period, a stage of ancient Egyptian civilization that is particularly complicated for research and interpretation. I.V. Bogdanov also investigates Egypt’s foreign relations with the Levant, relative chronology based on genealogical data, peculiarities of organizing the rulers’ cult in the Memphis residence and in the provinces, religion in daily life based on anthroponymic data, problems of organizing expeditions and many other topics.

Working for many years at the Institute, I.V. Bogdanov has become one of the recognized experts on Egyptology in Russia. His works on the history of ancient Egypt and neighbouring regions are valued highly in Russian centers of Egyptology (Moscow, Saint Petersburg) and in foreign ones as well. He actively participates in Russian and international conferences and also organizes academic events.

Ivan V. Bogdanov is the author of 70 publications (including his monograph “History and Culture of Ancient Egypt in the Mirror of Inscriptions: Monuments and Their Fates” [История и культура Древнего Египта в зеркале эпиграфики: памятники и их судьбы]) on a wide range of issues of Egyptology and history of the Ancient East.

In recent years I.V. Bogdanov has shown himself to be a talented educator and his courses at the Higher School of Economics (Saint Petersburg) “History of Ancient Civilizations (Ancient Egypt)” and “Grammar of Old Egyptian” are popular among students.

I.V. Bogdanov has earned respect and recognition of his colleagues at the Institute. He is known for kindness, consideration of others and readiness to help his colleagues.

The IOM RAS administration and colleagues congratulate Ivan V. Bogdanov on his anniversary and wish him good health and new successes in academic work in the fields of Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern studies.

We would like to thank Ivan V. Bogdanov for many years of diligent and dedicated work.

Irina F. Popova, Corresponding member of the RAS, Doctor of Sciences in History
Director of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS
