In this book we use the expression ‘Archaic myths of the Orient and Occident’ as relating to myths that did appear among the agricultural population in Europe, in Western and in Southern Asia during the later epoch of the pre-urban, or primitive society, but continued to exist virtually unchanged also later, in the epoch of the Bronze and early Iron Age. The primitive myths of this zone are in their primacy form inaccessible to us because of the lack of written sources. But the population of the early class societies was, in its bulk, a direct continuation of the primitive populations of that zone, both physically and culturally, and thus could for a long time retain the creeds and customs of the primitive epoch. Therefore we have thought it permissible to use the early written traditions for the typological reconstruction of archaic myths.
