Venue: Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS (Novo-Mikhailovsky Palace, 18 Dvortsovaya Emb., St. Petersburg, Russia).

Organized by: Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, Russian Academy of Sciences; Institute of Language and Literature, Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

The conference has been held regularly since 2016 by the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS and the Institute of Language and Literature, MAS. Each conference is dedicated to a significant event in Mongolian studies or a prominent scholar who contributed to research on Mongolia and Central Asia. This year’s conference is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Mongolian Studies in Russia. By decree of Peter I, a “Munghal school” was established at the Voznesensky monastery in Irkutsk which became the first institution in Russia where Mongolian was taught. Special attention will be devoted to: Vladimir A. Kazakevich (1896–1937), Russian researcher who greatly contributed to research on literature, history and languages of Mongolian peoples, tirelessly collected manuscripts and conducted field studies in Mongolia and regions around Lake Baikal in Russia; and Dashdorjiin Natsagdorj (1906–1937), the author of more than 100 works considered cultural treasures of the Mongolian people, one of the founders of modern Mongolian literature, an outstanding prose writer, poet, playwright and public figure. During the conference we plan to discuss issues tied with the establishment of diplomatic ties between Russia and Mongolia in 1921 that stimulated cooperation between our countries. The goal of the conference is to present new research results on Mongol written and oral sources and archival materials, and to demonstrate possibilities of new research methods and approaches to current issues in Mongol studies in Russia, Mongolia and across the world.

The working languages of the conference are: Russian, Mongolian, English.
