Anniversary of T.I. Oranskaya Print E-mail
27/10/2025

October 27, 2025 is the birthday anniversary of Tatyana Iosifovna Oranskaya, Senior Researcher at the Department of Central and South Asian Studies, IOM RAS.

In 1973 she graduated from the Leningrad State University (Faculty of Oriental Studies) with Honours (specialization: Oriental philology) and started working as an assistant at the Department of Indian philology of the same Faculty.

In 1986 she successfully defended her Candidate of Sciences in Philology thesis titled “Pronominal clitics in Indo-Iranian languages” [Местоименные клитики в индоиранских языках] under supervision of Academician M.N. Bogolyubov. In 1997 she became the Head of the Department of Indian philology at the Saint-Petersburg State University and in 1999 was appointed as Associate Professor. She taught modern Indian languages, literature and theoretical grammar of these languages. She prepared a course in comparative-historical grammar of Indo-Aryan languages, thereby perpetuating the St. Petersburg tradition of Indo-Aryan philology.

Later, Tatyana I. Oranskaya has conducted fieldwork and taught for many years in India and Pakistan.

Since 2022 she has been working at the IOM RAS continuing her research on comparative-historical and descriptive grammar of Indo-Aryan languages, including the Parya language. She is actively involved in academic life of the Institute.

Tatyana I. Oranskaya puts much effort into popularization of Indian culture in Russia. In 2023 she has organized the exhibition “Modern archaic: tribal art of India” [Современная архаика: искусство племен Индии] at the State Museum of the History of Religion, which had great success and media coverage. For her contribution to the study of Indian languages and literatures, Tatyana I. Oranskaya is a recipient of awards “For teaching Hindi” and “For service to Hindi” from cultural and educational organizations of India.

Always friendly and supportive, Tatyana I. Oranskaya is highly respected and liked by her colleagues.

On her anniversary, we would like to thank Tatyana I. Oranskaya for many years of diligent work and dedication to research.

Irina F. Popova, Corresponding member of the RAS, Doctor of Sciences in History
