Dear colleagues and fellow citizens!
Congratulations on the Great Victory! Every family in our country was in one way or another impacted by the Great Patriotic War (1941‒1945). On this day we honour those who saved our lives, independence and freedom. The war was a severe trial for our Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (at the time the Institute of Oriental Studies in Leningrad).
As of July 1, 1941, there were 130 researchers and postgraduate students in the Institute. In July-August 1941, 27 of them joined the People’s Militia, 21 were conscripted for military service in the Red Army. 42 fell in battle or died during the siege of Leningrad. Their heroism prevailed and they saved our academic scholarship. We express our profound gratitude to them. Eternal memory!
On behalf of everyone at the IOM RAS,
Irina F. Popova
A memorial plaque at the IOM RAS lists the names of 37 Institute researchers and staff members who fell in battle or died during the siege of Leningrad.
