The city of St. Petersburg, which was the capital of Russia for more than two hundred years, possesses many of the treasure houses of the Russian Empire, among which are the libraries holding millions of rare books in various languages. Old Tibetan and Mongolian books are kept in three major libraries: the Institute of Oriental Studies, St. Petersburg State University, and the National Library of Russia (formerly State Public Library).
