Born on March 28, 1928, in Bogorodsk, the Moscow Region.
Graduated from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies. Later headed the Institute of Linguistics, RAS. He widened the scope of academic researches carried out at the Institute of Linguistics with covering the field of Oriental languages.
From 1984, corresponding member of the RAS.
In 1995, was given the Russian Federation State Award.
Major research interests: studies of Chinese, general linguistics, languages of South Eastern Asia.
