Doctor of Sciences (equiv. Habilitation) - Philology (28.10.1901 — 03.06.1935)
Born on October 28 (10), 1901 in Peterhof near St Petersburg.
In 1925, graduated from Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Linguistics and Studies of Literature. Studied Sanskrit and Buddhist philosophy under supervision of Acad. Th. Stcherbatsky.
From 1928 to 1930, a researcher at the Institute for the Studies of Buddhist Culture. From 1930 to 1935, a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies.
In 1935, obtained the PhD degree, without defence, and was given the academic rank of senior researcher.
Internationally renowned for his pioneering studies of Abhisamayalamkara and his English translation of the History of Buddhism by the famous Tibetan writer Bu ston rin chen grub. Was elected as an Honored Member of All India Research Society.
The 15th Conference “Travels to the East - 2023” will be held at the IOM RAS on March 27, 2024. The event is organized by the Department of Central Asian and South Asian Studies and the Department of Far Eastern Studies.
