Japanese antiquity (research on history and law). Edited monograph. Issue 1 / Eds. Ermakova L.M., Baksheev L.S., Suroven D.A. — Yekaterinburg: Ural State Law University, 2023. — 400 p. ISBN 978-5-7845-0716-7

The volume contains research articles and translations of Japanese sources on the history of society, state and law in ancient and early medieval Japan (up to the late 8th century). It includes a selection of excerpts of lectures on ancient Japan (before 645 CE) given by Professor N.I. Konrad in 1937. “New selection of records about divination by turtle [shells]” is translated into Russian with annotations by L.M. Ermakova. Several articles contain analysis of archaeological finds of bronze mirrors with a focus on politogenesis processes in ancient Japan. Legal aspects of succession to the throne in ancient Japan are considered in relation to the religio-political mogari ritual. There are articles on ways of determining geographical boundaries in the artistic tradition of Japan, and on ritual as a way of regulating economic activities in ancient Japanese society on the basis of customary law. One article deals with the topic of tax legislation and labor duties of early medieval Japan, and another takes up ritual and practical forms of control over natural disasters in eighth-century Japan. The volume is aimed at researchers of academic institutions, lecturers, graduate students, students of Asian studies and history, and everyone interested in the history of ancient and early medieval Japan.
