Born in 1952 in Leningrad.
In 1974, graduated from Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Section of the History of Afghanistan and Iran. From 1974 up to 2011, worked at the Leningrad/St Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies / IOM RAS, was a senior researcher.
In 1984, defended the PhD Dissertation, The States and Peoples of the Eastern Hindukush during the 2nd Half of the 19th Century and English Colonial Expansion [Государства и народы Восточного Гиндукуша во 2-ой пол. XIX в. и английская колониальная экспансия].
During 1986—1989, the academic secretary of the Institute.
Major research interests:
the history, historiography and source studies of Afghanistan and adjoining territories; edition of texts; the history of Oriental studies.
