International conference for young scholars

“Modern Buddhist education, historical, cultural and philosophical studies”

dedicated to the 260th anniversary of the Buddhist traditional sangha in Russia,
the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
the 300th anniversary of the Saint Petersburg State University

November 22–24, 2023
Saint Petersburg, Russia

 

Organizer of the conference: the Datsan Gunzechoinei Buddhist temple (Saint Petersburg) represented by: Centralized religious organization “Gurban-Erdeni” (Three treasures), Dashi-Dorzho Etigelov Buddhist theological academy, Foundation for development of Buddhist culture.

Co-organizers: Institute of Oriental Manuscripts RAS (Asiatic Museum), Institute of Asian and African Studies at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Institute of Theology at the Saint Petersburg State University, Department of relations with religious organizations of the Saint Petersburg Governor Administration, Committee of local government, inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations of the Leningrad regional Government.

The following themes will be discussed during the conference:

- traditions of Buddhism in science and education;
- modern Buddhist education in Russia and across the world;
- current goals of crosscultural and inter-religious interaction;
- future prospects of historical, cultural and philosophical studies in the context of new technologies.

Scholars in the fields of philosophy, culture, Buddhist studies, theology from various institutions of science and culture in Russia and other countries, university lecturers and students, young researchers, as well as representatives of government institutions and public organizations are invited to participate.

During the conference a roundtable will be held on the topic “Inter-religious relations in science and culture – sharing experience”.

Working languages of the conference: Russian, English.

Format: in-person or online. Participation in the conference and journal publication are free of charge.

The application should include the following information:
Information about the participant (full name, place of work and position, academic degree and/or academic title, phone number, email);
Presentation title and abstract (700 characters);
Participation format (in-person or online);
Hotel accommodation (required, not required);
Date and time of arrival and departure (to/from Saint Petersburg).

Presentation texts will be considered for publication in the special issue of the IOM RAS journal “Mongolica” (expected publication date: June 11, 2024). Submissions should follow the journal’s format. Deadline for submissions is February 1, 2024, texts should be sent to Irina V. Kulganek (kulgan@inbox.ru). Texts will be selected by the Organizing committee and the editorial board of the journal “Mongolica”.
