Round table: 80 years since Alisher Navoiy’s 500th anniversary in the besieged Leningrad (report) Print E-mail

The round table marking 80 years since the celebration of the great poet and thinker Alisher Navoiy’s 500th anniversary in the besieged Leningrad (full programme in Russian) was held at the IOM RAS on 10 December 2021. Orientalists, historians, and public figures of Russia and Uzbekistan took part in this event.

Welcome speeches were given by Mr. Firdavs Abduxoliqov, Chairperson of the World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, Mr. Ibrohim Gafurov, scholar and translator, Hero of Uzbekistan, and Mr. Alisher Babayev, Consul of Uzbekistan in Saint Petersburg.

Irina F. Popova, Director of the IOM RAS, Doctor of Sciences in History, Corresponding Member of the RAS, gave a presentation about two conferences marking Alisher Navoiy’s 500th anniversary that took place under bombings in the besieged Leningrad on 10 December 1941 in the Hermitage and on 29 December 1941 in the Institute of Oriental Studies with participation by distinguished scholars and cultural figures such as I.A. Orbeli, E.E. Bertels, B.B. Piotrovsky, V.A. Rozhdestvensky, N.F. Lebedev and others. I.V. Tunkina, Director of the Saint Petersburg branch of the RAS Archive, Doctor of Sciences in History, Corresponding Member of the RAS, gave a talk about the work done by Leningrad scholars during the siege.

The life and works of Alisher Navoiy, humanistic ideas in his texts, literary milieu of the poet, unique manuscripts of Alisher Navoiy in Russia, and his poems recited in Uzbek and Russian languages were topics of presentations by:
Shuhrat Sirojiddinov, Doctor of Philology, Rector of the Alisher Navoiy Tashkent State University of the Uzbek Language and Literature;
Aftondil Erkinov, Doctor of Philology;
Olimjon Davlat, Doctor of Philosophy, Chairperson of the Alisher Navoiy International Fund;
Rustam Jabborov, Doctor of Philology;
Burobiya Rajabova, Doctor of Philology;
Sultanmurod Olim, Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Naqshbandiya”;
Zarine A. Dzhandosova, Candidate of Sciences in History, Head of the Department of Central Asia and Caucasus Studies, Faculty of Asian and African Studies, St Petersburg University;
Tatiana A. Anikeeva, Candidate of Sciences in Philology, senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS.

After the meeting, Round table participants visited the exhibition of unique manuscripts of Alisher Navoiy kept at the IOM RAS. The guests from Uzbekistan presented albums in the series “Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in World Collections” as a gift to the IOM RAS Library.
