The presentation by V. A. Vetyukov focuses on various aspects of the military tradition of Vietnam that remains relatively understudied (in comparison with military traditions of other Asian countries). Vietnam, the only country in Southeast Asia belonging to the Chinese cultural sphere, has a very rich military history that led to the creation of specific forms of army organization, officer selection, tactics, strategy, martial arts and weapons. All these elements constitute the military tradition of the Daiviet state in the 10th–18th centuries. Some elements survived in the colonial era (mid-19th to the first half of the 20th century) and still exist today as a part of the traditional Vietnamese culture. The presentation is based on materials gathered by V.A. Vetyukov during many years of research and will contain unique illustrations collected during several visits to Vietnam. |
