The Intellectual Traditions of Ismailis and Sufis

The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London, jointly with the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, will hold an academic conference in memory of Wladimir Alekseevich Ivanow (1886–1970), the outstanding Russian scholar of Iranian Studies and a foremost scholar of modern Ismaili Studies. The Conference will examine various aspects of Sufi and Ismaili traditions and the emergence of rich devotional, literary and artistic expressions as a result of their interactions. Scholars are invited to submit their papers, based on archival materials and original sources, on the interactions between the two Islamic traditions.
Within the framework of the Conference there will be an exhibition of photographs related to the life and work of Wladimir Ivanow. The Conference programme also includes a book launch of the Russian edition of Wladimir Ivanow’s memoirs Fifty Years in the East, edited by Dr. Farhad Daftary with a translation of the introduction and commentary by Adilya Yulgusheva.
