Joint Russian-Iraqi expedition Print E-mail
06/04/2019
Russia's archeological mission is set to return to Iraq after it had to leave it 35 years ago, due to political issues and a prolonged period of instability in the country. Scholars from the Institute of Archeology and Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) will perform fieldwork in two Iraqi provinces in southern Mesopotamia on April 5-11, 2019, as Dr. Shakhmardan Amirov told TASS news agency.

The Institute of Archeology plans to perform the first stage of fieldwork of the joint Russian-Iraqi expedition on April 5-11, 2019. The expedition is gearing up to research a town of the Old Babylonian period situated in the Dhi Qar Governorate, 30 km away to the West of Ur (one of the oldest Sumerian city-states in Mesopotamia that existed from around 4,000 BC to 500 BC). Apart from that we plan to study Ubaid monuments in the Maysan Governorate on the east bank of the Tigris river not far from the Iranian border," Amirov said.

Alexey Yankovsky-Dyakonov, a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS, and Vasily Novikov, an archeologist specializing in aerial imagery, will join the expedition alongside Amirov.

In 2016, the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS, organized an international conference attended by the Iraqi Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Abdulameer al-Hamdani. One of the key results of the meeting was the decision to resurrect the Russian studies in the Southern Mesopotamia. The joint Russian-Iraqi expedition will study the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of early civilizations in southern Iraq.
