Jubilee of Dr M.Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya Print E-mail

On January 28, 2013, Dr Margarita I. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya, the Head of the Section of South Asian Studies of the Department of Central and South Asian Studies, celebrated the glorious Jubilee.

Dr M. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya started her work at the Institute right after her graduation from the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University, in 1956. Her entire academic career that followed it has been connected with our Institute and study of its manuscripts collection. She is now the recognized expert in paleographic description and translation of manuscripts in various languages of Indian and Central Asia. She has mastered all the issues of work with manuscripts. She wrote brilliant papers on the history of manuscript books in India, Tibet, Silk Road area (ed. in The Manuscript Book in Culture of Peoples of the Orient. Vol. 2 [Рукописная книга в культуре народов Востока. Книга вторая], Moscow 1988). She followed the methodological approach to manuscripts as cultural artifacts later, too, when joined the project of edition of Indian manuscripts from Central Asia (Monuments of Indian Writings from Central Asia [Памятники индийской письменности из Центральной Азии], Issues 1-3. 1985-2004).

In her recent monograph, The Great Discoveries of Russian Scholars in Central Asia [Великие открытия русских ученых в Центральной Азии] (St Petersburg 2011), and some previous historical and biographic accounts, Dr M. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya collated her researches into the history of formation of the manuscripts collection of the Asiatic Museum (now the IOM RAS).

Dr M. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya is highly honored by the academic Orientalist community both in Russia and abroad. She is a member of the editorial boards of the series Pamyatniki Pismennosti Vostoka (ed. by Vostochnaya Literatura publishers, the Russian Academy of Sciences) and Corpus inscriptionum Iranicarum series.

Dr M. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya takes an active part in social life of the Institute. She is a member of the IOM's Academic Council and Dissertation Council. She is always open to give academic consultations to her colleagues, especially young scholars.

The administration and all the researchers at the IOM heartily congratulate Dr M. Vorobyova-Desyatovskaya with her Jubilee and wish her solid health and new academic achievements.
