On February 4, 2013, Dr Serguei G. Klyashtornyj, the Head of the Department of Central and South Asian Studies, celebrated his 85th Birthday. Dr S.Klyashtornyj is a preeminent Russian Turkologist, a great expert in the history of old Turkic peoples who contributed greatly to the development of Russian Oriental studies. He is the author of more than 200 academic papers including 6 individual monographs and 9 collective monographs. He is the editor-in-chief of Turkologica Journal. His works were highly recognized both in Russia and abroad, he received state awards from the governments of Mongolia and Kyrghyzstan. In 1957, he joined the Institute as a junior researcher and later, as a rather young man, was appointed the head of the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Studies (from 2010 united with the Department of South and South Eastern Asian Studies into the current Department of Central and South Asian Studies). His research interests are very wide, he combined merits of a talented historian and attentive expert in sources, brilliant historiographer and sophisticated expositor of historical texts, eloquent lecturer and skillful teacher.
