Jubilee of Prof Dr E.Ostrovskaya Print E-mail
21/02/2013

On February 13, 2013, Prof Dr Elena P. Ostrovskaya, the leading researcher at the Section of South Asian Studies, the IOM RAS, celebrated her Jubilee.

Prof Dr E. Ostrovskaya started her work at the Institute on January 7, 1980, as a junior researcher at the then Department of South and South Eastern Asian Studies. From the very beginning, she showed a great interest in Indian religious and philosophical systems, first relating to Brahmanism, then to Buddhism. Her first important edition was the annotated translations from Sanskrit of the treatises by Annambhata, Tarka Samgraha and Tarka Dipika (Moscow, 1989, Pamyatniki Pismennosti Vostoka series).

Later she joined the great work on revitalization of traditions of St Petersburg Buddhology destroyed during the Stalinist period. The project was initiated by Dr Valery I. Rudoi (1940-2009) with whom she carried out the complex study of The Encyclopedia of Abhidharma by Vasubandhu (4th to 5th c.), one of the mist important Buddhist philosophical treatises (their joint edition was published in several volumes, from 1998 to 2009).

Several years ago Prof Dr E. Ostrovskaya started her own project aimed at the study of the history of St Petersburg Buddhology and acquisition of Buddhist manuscripts for the Asiatic Museum (now the IOM RAS). She has published several papers on the subject in the IOM’s journal Written Monuments of the Orient including high leveled theoretical papers, accounts of academic contributions of the preceding scholars, serious reviews of the books of colleagues.

Prof Dr E. Ostrovskaya combines her research work with social and pedagogical activities, she supervises some doctoral students, takes an active part in the organization of the Conferences in Memory of O.O. Rosenberg held at the IOM RAS annually.

The IOM’s administration and colleagues wish her good health and new academic achievements

the IOM's Director, Prof Dr Irina F. Popova
