On March 1, 2012, at the Dissertation Council of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, St Petersburg State University, the defense of PhD Dissertation by D.A. Nosov, Narrative Structure of Mongolian Folktales [Структура повествования монгольской народной сказки], was held. The Dissertation was supervised by Dr Irina V. Kulganek, leading researcher at the Department of Central and South Asian Studies, the IOM RAS. Dr Aleksey A. Burikyn, leading researcher at the Institute of Linguistic Studies RAS, and Dr Maria P. Petrova, the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, St Petersburg State University, were official opponents. The aim of the Dissertation was to distinguish the narrative type of fairy-tales (described by Vladimir J. Propp) among folk-narratives of Mongolian speaking peoples (the Buryats, Kalmyks and Khalkha Mongols). The author defines cumulative stories as a separate narrative type in Mongolian folklore. This work is of high importance for further narrative and comparative research of Mongolian folklore and literature. |
