On January 25, 2010, at the meeting of the Academic Council Dr K.G.Maranjian gave a report entitled On a New Acquisition of the Japanese Mss Collection Kept at the IOM RAS [О новом поступлении в японскую коллекцию ИВР РАН]. We offer to your attention the abstract of the paper: - In 2009, the IOM RAS acquired a Japanese ms entitled Roshia koku hyōmin goran mondō shazen (魯西亜国漂民御覧問答写全 - The Full Copy of the Questions and Answers about Russia Given by the Shipwrecked Japanese Sailors at the Audience with the Shogun). It tells about the adventures of the Japanese sailors from the Shinshō-maru Ship wrecked in 1783. They got to the Russian shore and spent some years in Russia. Strictly saying, it is the record of the interrogation the sailors had to undergo after their return back to Japan.
- The ms was written in cursive. There is no introduction or colophon so we have no information on the scribes or the date the ms was made. The ms contain some pictures, one of them present the sailors Daikokuya Kōdayū and Isokichi, another a scheme of the place where the interrogation was held.
- The last two folia are covered with a totally different text, a fragment from Wakan sansai zue (倭漢三才圖會 - the Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia of the three major parts of the world) supplied with a map from the same source.
- The acquired ms, presumably dated by the first half of the 19th century, is not so rare, still has some interest as a source on the first Russian Japanese contacts.
