Jubilee of Dr I.Kulganek Print E-mail

On September 22, 2009, Dr Irina V.Kulganek, a senior researcher at the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Studies, celebrated her Jubilee.

In 1974, she graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Leningrad University, the Deparment of Mongolian Philology. From 1977 up to present, she has worked at the Institute, first as an academic technician, then as a junior researcher, from 1989 as a researcher, from 1998 as a senior researcher. In 1989, she defended the PhD dissertation, Poetics of the Mongolian National Songs (On Documents Kept at the Manuscript Department of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, the USSR Academy of Sciences), in 2009 the habilitation dissertation, The Minor Genres of Mongolian Poetical Folklore [Малые жанры монгольского поэтического фольклора].

Major academic interests of Dr I.V.Kulganek include folklore studies, studies of literature, the theory of translation, the history of sciences and arts, archival and cultural studies. At the moment, she is one of the leading Russian Mongolists. Her works are highly appraised by both the colleagues from Russian academic centers located in St Petersburg, Moscow, Ulan Ude, Elista, and the foreigh colleagues, from Mongolia and Europe. Dr I.V.Kulganek took part in a number of international conferences held in Russia, the UK, Hungary, Turkey, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and herself organized some conferences in St Petersburg, Moscow, Elista, Ulan Ude, Irkutsk, Ufa.

Dr I.V.Kulganek has published 6 monographs (four of them written along with her colleagues), more than 70 papers on various issues of poetics of Mongolian folklore, more than 10 papers on the history of Mongolian studies, more than 20 reviews on papers by other Mongolists.

Since 1992, she has given lectures on poetics of Mongolian folklore and the history of Eastern arts at various St Petersburg universities and faculties, supervised and opposed a number of Bachelor and Master papers.

Dr I.V.Kulganek curated the Institute's doctoral programs for five years, worked at the Institute's trade union for more than five years, edits the St Petersburg academic journal MONGOLICA (from 1993 as a member of editorial board, from 2007 as the chief editor), she is the vice presdient of the Mongolian Society of the Studies of Folk Songs (from 2002), a member of the editoral board of the Japanese academic journal Моngolorum (from 2005) and the Kalmykian academic series Pismennye pamyatniki narodov Vostoka, a foreign member of the Mongolian Academy of Social Sciences (from 2008).

She has a letter of award from the Presidium of the RAS (1999), and two letters of award from the Mongolian State Library (2005, 2006).

She was awarded by the President of Mongolia in connection with the 800th anniversary of the United Mongolian State (2006), the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (2006), the Society of Russian Mongolian Friendship (2008).
