2008 Beijing Seminar on Tibetan Studies Print E-mail
30/10/2008

On October 13—17 2008 the Beijing Seminar on Tibetan Studies was held by the China Tibetology Research Center (CTRC). It was organized in cooperation with the China Association for Preservation and Development of Tibetan Culture and the Tibetan Academy of Social Sciences. A large number of scholars from both the CPR and some other countries such as Russia, USA, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, etc., took part in the Seminar. The St Petersburg academic studies were represented with papers given by Prof Dr V.L.Uspensky (Printing of Tibetan Books in Russia in the Eighteenth — Early Twentieth Centuries) and Dr A.V.Zorin (On the Structure of the Collection of Lyrical Songs Ascribed to the Sixth Dalai Lama).

The work of the Seminar was divided into eight panels such as 1) Social & Economic Studies; 2) Linguistics & Literature; 3) Religious Studies; 4) Sanskrit Studies; 5) Museum Studies; 6) History Studies; 7) Modern & Contemporary Studies; 8) Tibetan Medicine. Chinese, Tibetan and English were the working languages.

Each participant was supplied with a set of four books, the first of which contained the entire official programme of the Seminar and the personal data of the scholars (in 3 languages), while the other three contained abstracts of all the papers given (in each of the working languages respectively). These reference books proved very useful and made the scholarly work at the plenary sessions more effective. Moreover, when it was necessary some speeches were interpreted.

The work of the panels proceeded from October 14 to 16, and on the 17th of October all the participants were taken to the new Olympic stadia in Beijing such as the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube. On the evening of the same day the scholars who had elected to take part in the fieldwork in Tibet (a total of 17 academics from various countries), departed from Beijing to Lhasa by train. The railway, inaugurated not so long ago, passes through Lake Kukunor and the Changthang Plateau, with the highest point fixed at more than 5 thousand metres. The delegates spent three full days in Lhasa, during which they visited the principal Tibetan temple, the Jokhang, the Tibet Museum and two of the Dalai Lamas' residences, the Potala and Norbulingka. One day was spent in Nyemo county where they met local peasants and craftsmen who were producing traditional wooden sculpture, paper and incense. In Lhasa the delegation was accepted by representatives of the local government. On October 23 the delegation returned to Beijing by plane.

Here is the official programme of the Seminar.
