On March 12, 2008 at the meeting of the Academic Council Dr T. Ermakova gave a report entitled Acad. Th. I. Stcherbatsky as an organizer of Oriental studies. Here is the abstract of the report: - The principal subject: the activities of Acad. Th. I. Stcherbatsky as the Head of the Institute for the Study of Buddhist Culture (1928–1930) and, subsequently, as the Head of the Indo-Tibetan Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies (1930–1942).
- In his organizing activities Acad. Th. I. Stcherbatsky relied upon the principle of historicism and transregional method, he advocated the necessity of teaching classical languages of the Indian written culture such as Sanskrit and Pali to young Buddhologists.
- In her report Dr T. Ermakova used widely numerous archival documents concerning the academic activities of Acad. Th. I. Stcherbatsky, kept at the IOM’s Archives of Orientalists, including those which remain unpublished.
