This book contains folktales in the Herati dialect of the Dari language of modern Afghanistan in Latin transliteration, their translations into Russian, grammatical and ethnographic commentaries. The texts were collected by the author during fieldwork in Afghanistan in 1979–1981 from illiterate and semiliterate dialect speakers who had preserved their dialect of the Khorasani type in its purest form. Amid the gradual disappearance of local dialects globally, this book will be of interest to linguists, ethnographers and folklorists, especially those who specialize in Iranian and Afghan studies and dialectology.
